BRITISH BOMBING ATTACK LARGE MERCHANT SHIP HIT. FIRES & EXPLOSIONS IN DOCK AREA. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, March 4. A Middle East headquarters com munique states that shipping in the harbour of Palermo was successfullj attacked on the night of March 2. A direct hit was obtained on a. largft merchant ship which had motoi transport as deck cargo. A fire broke out on board and was still burning six hours later. Subsequent bombing caused other considerable fires and violent explosions in the area of the shipping and engineering works, dry docks and seaplane base.
