MAGISTRATE’S COURT

SITTING IN MASTERTON POLICE AND OTHER CASES. LIQUOR IN OR NEAR DANCE HALLS. The fortnightly sitting of the Masterton Magistrate’s Court was held this morning before Mr H. P. Lawry, S.M. A charge of failing to report an accident in which a person, Betty Margaret Pearce was injured on February 4, was preferred against Valentine Charles Taplin. Mr G. D. Wilson, who represented defendant entered a plea of guilty. -Counsel said there was no suggestion of hit and run and when defendant took the child home he thought she was uninjured and only shaken, though unfortunately it turned out later that the child suffered a broken hip. The Magistrate said that the fact that the parents knew who the defendant was when the child was taken home made the case less serious. A fine of 30s with costs 10s was imposed. Several cases were heard relating to the drinking or possession of liquor in or near a dance hall. Norman Alexander Carswell was charged with drinking intoxicating liquor in the Municipal Hall at a dance held there on February 7. Defendant was fined £3 with costs, Wallace Brown, Ivan Walter Stevens, Dave Walker, Watchman Walkef and Andrew Ivan Christie were charged with being in possession of beer in the vicinity of a dance being held in the Municipal Hall on February 7. Each defendant was fined £3, with costs. The Magistrate pointed out that offenders were liable to a fine of £lO. The Borough Traffic Inspector, Mr J. McGregor, proceeded against four cyclists for riding bicycles at night without lights. The cyclists concerned were Keith Stanley McEwen, Frank Watson, Violet Edwards and Tone Haeata, all of whom were fined £1 each, with costs. CIVIL CASES. Judgment for plaintiff by default was given in the following undefended civil cases: —Richard Donworth v. Maata'Asher, £25 9s, costs £4 3s 6d; Vivian Edward Donald v. A. W. Ashworth, £4 10s, costs £1 14s 6d; Bullick Blackmore Ltd. v. P. Knott, £3 ss, costs £1 7s 6d; A. C. Richardson v. A. J. Fogarty, £7 10s, costs £1 Ils 6d; Mary Ellen Horsley v. H. Robinson, £ll 7s 6d, costs £2 15s.
