OBITUARY

MR M. DIGGINS. The death occurred early this morning of a well known Masterton resident in the person of Mr Michael Diggins, of Bentley Street, after a short illness. The late Mr Diggins, who was born in Killorgan, County Kerry, Ireland, 85 years ago, came to New Zealand in 1382 in the “Star of China.” He resided in the South Island for a few years and then came to the North Island, where he entered the service of the New Zealand Railways, eventually settling in Masterton, and retiring in 1922. The late Mr Diggins took no part in local politics, but interested himself in many branches of sport, etc., in Masterton, and especially in football, his two sons being outstanding players and Wairarapa representatives. Possessing a quiet, ‘sympathetic nature, he was very popular with a large circle of friends in the Wairarapa, who will learn with feelings of deep regret of his death. A widow, two sons (Messrs D. P. Diggins, Palmerston North, and J. F. Diggins, Wellington, and one daughter, Miss Mary Diggins, Masterton) are left to mourn their loss, and to them the sympathy of their many friends will be extended. There are also five grandchildren. A daughter died some years ago. The funeral will take place on Saturday morning, leaving St. Patrick’s Church after Requiem Mass at 9 a.m. for the Masterton Cemetery.
