ALLEGED MANSLAUGHTER
SOUTHLAND CASE. A SECOND MAN ACCUSED. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) INVERCARGILL, March 2. In the Magistrate’s Court today, William Lawrence, aged 42, farmer, Makarewa, and James Mann, aged 69, labourer, Makarewa, appeared before Mr Abernethy, S.M., jointly charged with wilfully killing John Meagher and thereby committing manslaughter. Senior Detective R. Thompson asked that both accused be remanded till March 11. The magistrate remanded accused till March 11 and allowed bail at their own surety of £5OO and another surety of £5OO in each case. On, February 23, when the case first came before the Court, only Lawrence was charged. A Press Association message said it was alleged that when Lawrence was visiting the home of Meagher’s mother an argument started between the two men and blows were struck. Lawrence is said to have reported what had happened to the police and Meagher was later found by the roadside with severe head injuries and with his arms and legs tied. '
