BOWLING CLUB RINKS CHAMPIONSHIP. (“Times-Age” Special.) Further games in the Carterton Bowling Club's rink championship were played on Saturday. Afternoon tea was presided over by Misses M. Stent and M. Forbes, who were accorded a hearty vote of thanks. The following were results of the games played on Saturday:— Champion rinks: Newbould, Beaven, Hughan, Barr (s) beat Aplin, Underhill, Barber, G. Hart (s), 22/17; G. Steven, Pankhurst (sub.), Simmonds, Sorensen (s) beat) Kilmister, W. A. Hart, Curtis, Harp (s), 26/16. Other games: Hawker, Callender, DeLacey (s) beat Rayner, A. Thompson, Whyte (s), 26/11; Clarke, Smith, Stent (s) beat Irwin, Foster, Riggs (s), 26/17; Spooner, Larsen, R. Thompson (s) beat Colson, Bain, Tucker (s), 27/14; Goulden, Adams, Harrington, Harris (s) beat McCarty, Billington, Payne, Martin (s), 19/16. The next games in the champion rinks will be between Sorensen and Hart. Barr has the bye. Personal items. Mr W. Martin, headmaster of the Carterton District High School, who has completed 40 years service as a teacher and in other branches of the Educational Department, was congratulated by the • staff in this connection at a gathering at the school. Mr Martin commenced teaching in Otago. At a gathering of the staff of the Carterton District High School, Mr J. Brown, who will leave on Friday next to join the fleet air arm, was the guest of honour. Mr W. Martin, headmaster, in making a presentation of a well-fill-ed hold-all, said that Mr Brown had been a pupil at the school, later had been a probationary teacher and then a teacher at the school. On behalf of the staff and the pupils he wished Mr Brown good luck and a safe return again to Carterton. Mr Brown suitably replied. Afternoon tea was provided by the staff. Mrs S. Borman, of Broadway, acting under medical advice, has entered the Croydon Private Hospital for treatment.
Mrs C. Sayer underwent an operation at the Croydon Hospital and is doing as well as can be expected. A pleasant gathering took place at Mi’ C. K. Goodin’s cycle premises Saturday when a presentation was made to Mr Vai. Lipinski, who has left the firm’s employ after seven years' service to take over the managership of the Regent Picture Theatre. In making the presentation of a fountain pen to Mr Lipinski, Mr Goodin eulogised the services rendered to the firm by Mr Lipinski. They were sorry to loose his services, and wished him success in his new venture. “For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow” was sung and Mr Lipinski thanked Mr Goodin for his kindly remarks and for the present. At the conclusion of the picture programme at the Regent Theatre on Saturday night, the staff gathered to say farewell to Mr Geo. Barrett, popular manager of the theatre, who has been transferred to Pahiatua. The new manager, Mr Lipinski, asked Mr Barrett to accept an electric toaster from the staff and a personal gift from himself of a pocket wallet. Mr Barrett’s health was toasted and the wish expressed that in his new sphere of labour, he would be successful. Mr Barrett suitably replied. Constable and Mrs Williams left Carterton this morning to spend a holiday in Wellington. Swimming Sports . The Carterton Amateur Swimming Club held its weekly sports gathering at the Carterton baths on Saturday afternoon, the results being as follow;—Junior boys’ 25 yards handicap: D. Scrimgeour 1, W. The King’s Theatre, Carterton, wan filled on Saturday night when a dance was held by the Y.M.C.A. and Citizens’ Committee. The music was provided by Mr Tom Udy's Dance Orchestra and extras were played by Mrs V. L. Robinson and Misses V. Irwin and U. Sorensen. The M’s.C. were Messrs Keith Reid and P. Beere. Supper was presided over by a ladies’ committee. Those present voted the dance one of the best ever held in Carterton. School Committee. The monthly meeting of the Carterton District High School Committee will be held in the Holloway Street school tonight at 8 o’clock. REGENT THEATRE TONIGHT’S PROGRAMME. “Unfinished Business” will be the excellent entertainment provided tonight, with Irene Dunne, Robert Montgomery and Preston Foster in the leading roles.
