FALL OF RANGOON
“MAY BE MATTER OF HOURS” ACCORDING TO AMERICAN AIRMEN. NATIVES IN MANY DISTRICTS REBEL. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) (Received This Day, 10.55 a.m.) NEW YORK, March 1. Dispatches from the American Volunteer Air Group in SouthWest China state: “Authoritative militarists believe that the fall of Rangoon is a matter of hours.” The same sources thought that the Japanese do not intend to attack Northern Burma after taking Rangoon, but will concentrate against India. It is announced that the American Volunteer Group have shot down over 80 Japanese planes, and simultaneously have continued strafing and demoralising attacks on enemy ground forces. One Volunteer Group pilot, after a visit to four large Burmese towns, said the natives in many districts had rebelled and killed unarmed Britishers. “The Burmese, ’ he said, “are assisting the Japanese in every way possible. The British are evacuating all the large towns, including Mandalay.”
