GAINS HELD
BY MACARTHUR’S TROOPS IN PHILIPPINES LIGHT FORCES ENGAGED ON BOTH SIDES. NO RECENT BOMBARDMENT OF FORTIFICATIONS. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day. 10.30 a.m.) RUGBY, February 27. General MacArthur's troops are holding their gains in the Philippines, according to a Washington war communique, which states: “Fighting continues in the Batan front, with light forces engaged on both sides. General MacArthur’s troops are holding advanced positions which represent gains of from one to eight kilometres along the entire front during the past 48 hours.
“The greatest advance has been made on the right of the line, north of Pilar. Our troops are being subjected to relatively light enemy air and artillery attacks. There has been no firing on our fortifications from enemy positions on the Cavite shore for several days. There is nothing to report from other areas.”
