BIRTHDAY MEETING
(“Times-Age” Special.)
A special meeting of the Carterton Women’s Christian Temperance Union was held on Wednesday afternoon to celebrate the 21st anniversary of the forming of the Carterton branch. The president (Mrs Tyler) presided over a very large attendance, and welcomed visitprs and friends. Mrs Lopdell, of Lower Hutt, gave an address, speaking of victories of the past, and urged her hearers to have faith for greater victories in the future. The main theme was “Keep on Keeping On.’ ’in an endeavour to make New Zealand clean, pure and fit for the younger generation to live in. Greetings were given by Mesdamcs A. C. Kennerley (Levin) Ordish (Dalefield), Church and Jansen (Masterton), all the earlier members of the Carterton branch, and Adjutant Packer (Salvation Army). Greetings were sent by Mrs Peryman, the first president, who apologised for her unavoidable absence.
A motion of sympathy was passed to Mrs Heyder (Masterton) in the loss of her mother, all members standing. Musical items were contributed by Mrs Speight (Masterton), Miss R. Surtees and Lieutenant Dutton (Carterton). Mrs H. Peters gave much pleasure with her elocutionary items. Afternoon tea was served, Mrs H. Knutson and Mrs A. C. Kennerley, former secretaries for the Carterton branch, cut the birthday cake. Mrs Lopdell and Mrs Tyler were both presented with flowers.
