GREYTOWN

WOMEN’S DIVISION MEETING HELD YESTERDAY. (“Times-Age” Special.) The first meeting of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union for the year was held in the Parish Hall yesterday afternoon. Mrs Beu (president) welcomed the members and said that she hoped for better times in the near future. She said it was up to all members to help one another and to try and brighten up each other in the troublous times we are living in. Two visitors were welcomed, Mesdames Duncan and Bradshaw. Members stood in silence for a few moments in sympathy with Mrs A. D. Burch who had suffered bereavement. Mrs Beu expressed pleasure at hearing that Miss Kidd had recovered sufficiently to return home from the Greytown Hospital. Members were sorry to hear Mrs Thompson, Senr., had again entered the hospital. Sympathy was also expressed for Miss Wolters, of Carterton, who recently broke a a small bone in one of her legs. It was decided that members, as usual, supply luncheon to returned men on Anzac Day, in the Odd Fellows’ Hall, after the service. Mrs A. Johnson thanked Division members who had helped to make the Garden Party held in her garden last year for the Buchanan Home Christmas cheer, such a success, £23 13s 6d being the amount handed over. Letters of appreciation were read, one being from the Mission to Seamen, Wellington, for hampers. Mrs Nicholson, of Palmerston North, wrote thanking the Division for the kindness extended to her while living in Greytown. It was decided to send a jam spoon with the Division badge on, to Mrs Nicholson and to Mrs Gordon Ingley, who has left Greytown to reside in Lower Hutt. A discussion took place in regard to the annual conference this year. Members decided to leave the arrangements in the hands of the Advisory Board. Mrs Beu asked for helpers and the use of cars for the transport of canteen workers. Several members offered their cars. It was arranged to advertise meetings every month in the “Times-Age.” The competition for cut blooms was judged by Mesdames Judd and Bradshaw, the result being: Mesdames D. Ingley 1, D. Fairbrother 2, and C.

Maxton 3. ~ ~ Next month's competition is to be six queen cakes, two plates if liked. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames D. Fairbrother, H. Feast, W. J. Knell and R. Beu. Personal. Mrs Horsfall, of Wellington, is the guest of Mrs J. Rees, McMaster Street. Call to Fire. The Greytown Fire Brigade received a call at 6.15 o’clock last evening to a fire on the Moroa Plain where, fanned by a strong wind, an outbreak in a sawdust heap threatened to spread. The Brigade quickly dealt with the fire. Popular Dance. i The Morison’s Bush-Battersea War Services Committee will hold a euchre party and dance on Monday night. Good music, supper and a splendid floor make these gatherings popular. TOWN HALL PROGRAMME TONIGHT. “Hullabaloo” (approved for Universal Exhibition) a brilliant comedy featuring Frank Morgan and Billie Burke, and “West Point Widow” (recommended by the Censor for Adults), a delightful story starring Ann Shirley and ’Richard Carlson, will be shown tonight. ■
