VON PAPENS’ ESCAPE
SUPPOSED ASSASSINATION ATTEMPT. INQUIRY OPENED IN ANKARA. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 1.15 p.m.) ANKARA, February 24. The German Ambassador (Dr. von Papen) and Mrs von Papen were thrown to the ground, but escaped injury, when a bomb exploded seventeen yards from them, as they were walking along the Ataturk Boulevard. The bomb blew a man to pieces, slightly injured two young girls and considerably damaged two flats occupied by senior members of the staff of the British Embassy. The police believe that an attempt was made to assassinate the German Ambassador. Just before the explosion a man was seen walking in the opposite direction to the von Papens, carrying an object wrapped in ■ rags, which is believed to have been the bomb. The von Papens returned to the German Embassy, suffering only from shock. The Foreign Minister (Mr Sai;ajoglu) representing President Inonu and the Premier (Dr. Saydam) expressed regret to Dr. von Papen. An official inquiry has begun.
