DEFENCE BONDS

PURCHASE BV AMERICAN WORKERS FEDERATION PRESIDENT’S PLEDGE. HUGE TOTAL THIS YEAR. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) WASHINGTON, February 22. Mr William Green, president of the American Federation of Labour, today pledged that his members would purchase 1,000,000,000 dollars’ worth of Defence Bonjls during 1942. Ho said that 5.000.000 federation workers would invest at least four dollars a week on a systematic, basis, and the members had already purchased 200,000,000 dollars' worth of bonds in the first two months of 1942. The Secretary of the Treasury, Mr Morgenthau, commented that the pledge was a magnificent example to the whole country? “Organised labour of this country has known from the beginning that the Fascist system is a deadly menace to our free institutions,” he said. “We know that unless we and our Allies win the war there will be no survival of free trade unions and no chance to win a better future for the working men and women of the world.”
