PLANES & TANKS
SOUGHT BY MR NASH IN U.S.A. APPEAL FOR IMMEDIATE SUPPLIES. STRATEGIC IMPORTANCE OF NEW ZEALAND. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) WASHINGTON, February 21. The New Zealand Minister to Washington, Mr Nash, speaking on the radio, urged the United States to send more planes, tanks, and Avar equipment to New Zealand immediately. He added: “We realise that the defence of our shores is first and foremost our own responsibility. We appreciate what our friends in the United States and Britain have already provided for New Zealand's defence, but our needs are more urgent than ever.
“Our appeals for assistance are not prompted by selfish fears for our personal fortunes, but rather by cur firm belief that the war in the Pacific will be long and hard, and that, from a general 'strategic viewpoint, successful defence of New Zealand is of vital importance.”
