VICHY GIVING WAY
IN FACE OF NAZI DEMANDS USE OF THE FRENCH FLEET. AND OF AFRICAN BASES. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyrignt) (Received' This Day, 12.45 p.m.) WASHINGTON, February 22. Authentic reports reaching Washington indicate that the Vichy Government’s resistance to complete co-operation with Germany is rapidly crumbling. The conviction is grov/ing in Washington that the movement of units of the German fleet from Brest is part of a plan which includes the use of the French fleet in the coming German major offensive. It is feared that, at the proper moment, Germany will compel France to hand over the French fleet and grant the use of bases in the Mediterranean and in Africa, under threat of dire penalties on unoccupied France and against French prisoners of war. Hitler’s fears, that he must achieve a victorious conclusion of the war this year or lose, will make him utterly ruthless with those attempting _io withhold from him resources which' he feels are necessary for victory.
