DISOWNED IN CANADA

MR M. HEPBURN’S CRITICISM OF U.S.A. NAVY. (Bv Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) WASHINGTON, February 16. The Canadian Government is reported to have expressed regret to the United States over recent utterances by the Ontario Premier, Mr Mitchell Hepburn, who made the charge in two public addresses that the United States Navy in the Pacific was hiding from the Japanese. It was explained that the expression of regret did not constitute a formal apology, since Mr Hepburn was not a member of the Canadian Government, but merely a provincial Premier However, Canadian officials emphasised that few Canadians sympathised with Mr Hepburn’s views.
