CHINESE THRUST
INVASION OF THAILAND WITH R.A.F. BOMBER & FIGHTER SUPPORT. ENEMY MOVE ANTICIPATED.
(By Telegraph-Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 11.10 a.m.) LONDON, February 18. The All-India radio reports that the Chinese have invaded Thailand. The New Delhi radio says the Chinese who are reported to have invaded Thailand are fighting toward Chiengmai. A heavy force of R.A.F. bombers, escorted by Hurricanes, raided Chiengmai, where Japanese parachutists and 1,500 airborne Thai troops were concentrated for a drive on Central Burma. The New Delhi radio quoted a Rangoon communique as saying that fighting on the Bilin River front raged throughout the night and is still continuing. This morning our forces are holding their positions and fighting strongly. SERIOUS POSITION IN BURMA. Another communique issued in Rangoon states that the British front is now somewhere between the Sittang and Salween rivers. Heavy fighting is raging and the gravity of the situation becomes more manifest each hour. The Japanese, after hand to hand combat with Indian troops, forced a crossing at night of the Bilin River.
