TOWN AFFAIRS
MEETING OF BOROUGH COUNCIL UNIFORMS FOR HOME GUARD. REIMBURSEMENT OF EXPENSE DESIRED. There was a full attendance of councillors at last night's meeting of the Masterton Borough Council. The Mayor, Mr T. Jordan, presided. It was stated that the council had placed its order for drill uniforms for the Home Guard and trusted that the Government would reimburse this expense as previously applied for. It was agreed that representations be made through the Municipal Association, to make permissive only, instead of mandatory, the charging of interest on advances made by the District Fund Account to the Abattoir Account as required at present and that the opening credit balance of £297 10s 3d at April 1. 1940, in the Abattoir Account be transferred to the General Account in v iew of the opinion of the' Audit Office, that this amount belonged to the Council funds whereas if it was retained in the Abattoir ‘Account it became a credit that might be retained in the Abattoir Account to the advantage of the master butchers. Donations to the Begonia House extension to date totalled £l3 12s Bd, over a period of two years. The Wairarapa Interhouse Association was granted the use, on terms, of the Municipal Hall every Wednesday for 20 weeks from Easter for basketball. It was agreed to apply to the Masterton County Council for a contribution towards the upkeep of the cemetery.
The borough foreman was granted an increase of £25 per annum, as from February 1, for his car allowance, making it £125 per year.
