INVISIBLE FORCES

BROADCAST TO GERMANY. “German youth dies on the Russian front. Mothers lose their sons. Wives lose their husbands,” said a voice in a recent 8.8. C. talk broadcast to Germany. “But behind the German lines there are not only the Russian guerillas, there are, massing in the rear, the invisible forces of research, of which the mobilisation in London of scientists from 22 countries is only the visible sign. Presently on the battle front there will be other violent practical signs. An army of ideas, a blockade of brains, is being mustered by the fighting partnership of free research. German science, once great, has been part of the military machine for eight years, drilled by the High Command to produce the day-to-day needs of the forces. Like the Spitfires and the Hurricanes which defeated the Luftwaffe in the Battle of Britain, the fighting partnership of free research was late in going into production. Free research did not want to be a partner in fighting. It wanted to help, not destroy, humanity. Novz it is fighting the force which would destroy science itself. Last into action, it brings the latest discoveries, researches which unrestricted have been going on discovering new secrets, while German scientists have been forced to improvise to meet urgent military needs. Think well, Germans, what this means!”
