Mrs C. Groombridge, of Lincoln Road, Masterton, is visiting Dannevirke.
Mr Bernard Cane, son of Mr and Mrs J. Cane, Tararua Street, Masterton, has left Masterton to join the Air Force at Levin.
The appointment is announced in last night’s Gazette of the Hon Sir Francis Vernon Frazer, Wellington, to be Transport Appeal Authority. Miss Linda Fraser, who was formerly on the staff of Columba College, Dunedin, has taken a position at St Matthew’s Collegiate School, Masterton.
Mr Bert Chapman, formerly of the staff of the “Wairarapa Daily Times,” Masterton, and now of Morrinsville, has been appointed a Justice of the Peace.
The death occurred at Palmerston North on Wednesday of Mrs Caroline Polglase, widow of Mr Joseph Polglase, formerly of Pahiatua, at the age of 91 years.
Mr S. Akoorie, of the headquarters staff of the Amalgamated Theatres Ltd., Auckland, arrived in Masterton yesterday to assume control of the State Theatre, replacing Mr McDermott, who will return to the State Theatre, Wellington.
Mr Francis Albert Garry and Mr Thomas Kane will represent the North Island and Mr James Walter Armstrong and Mr William John Cartwright the South Island on the Teachers’ Superannuation Board, according to an election return announced in last night’s Gazette.
The personnel of the Excess Profits Tax Committee was officially announced last evening. It is as follows: —Mr W. R. Birnie, Palmerston North (chairman). Mr P. E. Pattrick, Wellington (member). Mr H. M. Christie. Waipukurau (member). Mr Birnie is a land agent, accountant and assessor for the Palmerston. North City Council. Mr Pattrick is a well-known Wellington accountant. Mr Christie, who is a farmer, was Government member of Parliament for Waipawa from 1935 to 1938. He is chairman of the Wool Council.
The death is announced from England of Sir Jeremiah Colman, chairman of J. and-J. Colman, Ltd., at the age of 82 years. Sir Jeremiah Colman was one of H.M. Lieutenants for the City of London, president of the Surrey County Cricket Club from 1916 to 1923, a vice-president of the Boy Scouts' Association, vice-president of the Y.M.C.A., and Knight of Grace of the Ancient Order of St John of Jerusalem. In 1904 he built and presented the Colman Institute, Redhill, and in 1930 presented the building for the Surrey Convalescent Home for Children!', Bognor.
