HITTING BACK HARD
AMERICANS IN LUZON BUT JAPANESE PILING UP REINFORCEMENTS. SATAN FRONT AT PRESENT QUIET. (By Telegraph—Press Association— Copyright) (Received This Day, 11.30 a.m.) WASHINGTON, February 6. The War Department reports: “Japanese gun emplacements on the south-eastern shore of Manila Bay were destroyed by fire from our fortifications. These artillery positions were presumably designed by the enemy for an attack against Corregidor. “Nine Japanese transports are at ports in Lingayen Gulf disembarking troops to reinforce the already very large enemy concentrations at Batan and at other points on Luzon. “Relative quiet continued along the front in Batan during the past 24 hours. Enemy aerial bombing attacks on our troops and positions, which began early in the day, decreased later on. They resulted in no damage. Intermittent artillery fire flared up in the centre. There has been some increase in patrol operations in the same general area.” QUIETER IN BURMA SOME SPASMODIC SHELLING. (Received This Day, 11.30 a.m.) (British Official Wireless.) RUCfBY, February 6. A Rangoon communique states: “During the last 24 hours the situation on the Salween front has become quieter. We shelled some enemy movement in the Paan area. Martaban was shelled spasmodically, but no damage or casualties are reported.”
