CONSCIENTIOUS APPEALS. AN INTERESTING RETURN. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. Appeals on conscientious grounds against military service overseas and with the Territorial Force totalled 2643 for the Dominion up to July 31 last, according to a return tabled in the House yesterday at the request of Mr Atmore (Independent, Nelson). The number of appeals determined was 1932 and those allowed totalled 243. Appeals against overseas service numbered 1630 by men drawn in the third, fourth and seventh ballots, and Territorial reservists who appealed totalled 1013. Boards dismissed 535 appeals outright, while 375 were dismissed subject to appellants giving [ non-combatant service. Adjournments • on other grounds or pending further! evidence were made in 229 cases and 182 were adjourned because of medical unfitness. Cases struck out be-: cause of permanent unfitness or for lack of prosecution reached 213 and 155 appeals were withdrawn. In the Wellington and Napier district 544 appeals were lodged, 321 being against overseas service and 223 against territorial service.- The boards determined 380 cases and decisions were as follows:—Dismissed outright, 143; dismissed subject to non-combat-ant service, 77; allowed, 52; adjourned on other grounds or pending further evidence, 10; adjourned because of medical unfitness, 26; struck out (permanently unfit) or dismissed for lack of prosecution, 30; withdrawn, 42.
