PEOPLE’S ARMY

NOT TO BE ALLOWED IN AUSTRALIA. STATEMENT BY MR FORDE. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) (Received This Day, 1.0 p.m.) CANBERRA, February 4. The Government has rejected the proposal to form a People’s Army in Australia. The Army Minister (Mr Forde) said there was no justification for private armed forces in Australia. If armies not under Government control were established the result would be chaotic. In the circumstances the Government would not allow them. He believed that the Volunteer Defence Corps would provide the right opening for many people who were'hot able to fit into the fighting arms or A.R.P. organisations, but who were desirous of rendering some real service.
