TUNNEL SHELTERS

IN CASE OF AIR RAIDS AN AUCKLAND SCHEME. GROUPS OF GALLERIES. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, February 4. The Albert Park and Constitution Hill tunnel shelter scheme for 20,000 people has been approved by the Government, according to advice received by the mayor and chief warden, Mr Allum. The practical effect of this is that the Government will find 75 per cent of the cost, which is estimated at £120,000, and the remainder will be provided by local bodies contributing to- the upkeep of the Emergency Precautions Service in Auckland. Plans prepared provide for groups of galleries arranged gridiron-fashion under Albert Park and the Bowen Avenue reserve. Each group will have cross-galleries at intervals so that there will be no dead ends. The shelter galleries are to be large enough in section to take a wooden bench on each side, with standing room between for use when all seating is occupied. Electric light and sanitation will be installed. WELLINGTON PROJECT. TUNNEL UNDER THE TERRACE. (Bv Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. An undertaking! that he would find the labour required for the proposed air-raid shelter tunnel under The Terrace, Wellington, was given by the Minister of National Service, Mr Semple, at the conclusion of an address

which he gave in the Town Hall last night on E.P.S. organisation. The Mayor, Mr Hislop, said that plans were practically ready and could be put into effect if the manpower and material were available. “I will take the responsibility of getting the labour required for shelter jobs,” said the Minister. “It has to be secured, both in this city and throughout the country, to give the maximum protection from any air raids which might come this way. I will get that labour. Don’t you get any headaches over it,” he added, turning to the mayor.
