BREAD SHORTAGE

IN PROSPECT IN EIRE DE VALERA URGES GREATER PRODUCTION. “REAL WAR STRUGGLE ONLY BEGINNING.” DUBLIN, February 3. Eire will face a considerable shortage of bread before the next harvest, said the Prime Minister, Mr de Valera, in a speech. He urged the farmers to increase their production so that the country would not be held up to ransom because of an acute scarcity. It appeared that the real war struggle was only beginning, he said. “He would be a fool who planned for less than four years as far as the emergency facing Eire is concerned. Eire is becoming more and more cut off from the world. If one belligerent attacked Eire the other would almost certainly join in, and we ourselves would also take a hand.” Eire, he said, required 250,000 fullytrained soldiers.
