TORPEDOES MISS
MONOWAI IN ACTION WITH SUBMARINE OUTSIDE NEW ZEALAND WATERS. ENEMY CRAFT DISAPPEARS IN THICK WEATHER. (By Telegraph—Press Association.)' WELLINGTON, This Day. It is officially announced that an action between H.M.N.Z.S. Monowai and an enemy submarine took place recently. “There were indications,’’ states the announcement, “that two torpedoes had been fired at the ship and five minutes later a submarine surfaced little more than four miles away, approximately in the direction from which the torpedoes had come. “The Monowai immediately opened fire which was returned by the enemy. No hit£ were made by either side, j Six minutes later the action was broken off by the submarine which dived and disappeared. The weather was poor at the time with a heavy thunderstorm and rain squalls. “This was the first occasion on which the Monowai had been in action. In his report the commanding officer praised the conduct of his ship’s company. The ratings included many young hands and all showed great steadiness under fire.
“This engagement did not take place in New Zealand waters.”
