The death occurred at Pahiatua yesterday of Mr Frederick Britland, at the age of 64 years.

Mrs Gertrude McAlpine, widow of Mr Arthur James McAlpine, formerly of Martinborough, died at Napier yesterday at the age of 53 years. Lieutenant N. M. Irwin has been promoted to the rank of captain as from January 1. Captain Irwin is attached to the Air Force at Rongotai. The many friends of Mr R. Button, of Walton’s Avenue, Masterton, will regret to learn that he has found it .necessary to enter the Masterton Hospital for treatment. The death is announced from London, a Sydney cablegram states, of Hugh D. Mclntosh, the former wellknown Australian boxing promoter, newspaper proprietor and theatrical director, at the age of sixty-five. He promoted the world championship fight between Johnson and Burns in 1908 at the Sydney Stadium. The death has occurred in Hastings of Mr James Banks, aged 69. Born in Yorkshire, Mr Banks came to New Zealand as a boy and settled in Christchurch, where he studied at Canterbuiy University College for the teaching profession, which he followed for 41 years. His first appointments were in the Taranaki and Wanganui districts and an appointment as headmaster of the Central School took him to Hastings. After seven years in that position he retired a few years ago.
