Wairarapa College.
It is pleasing to learn that, though certain other schools and colleges may be taken over for hospital or other purposes, the Wairarapa College and Hostel will not be affected, in any way. Day pupils and boarders are now being enrolled, and the College will open next week.
Depleted School Staffs. The effect of military mobilisation on the teaching staffs of schools was referred to yesterday by the Minister of Education, Mr Mason. The schools of the Dominions, he said, had already been hard hit by the calling-up of meh for military service, and he expected that the last call-up would claim a good many more. The schools, like others, would have to do the best they could in the circumstances. Asked if there had been a good response from married women ex-teachers to fill vacancies caused by the enlistment of men, the Minister said that he did not know what the figures were, but education boards were securing as many suitable teachers as they could. Many married teachers had helped during the last war and he believed many would do so again.
