FIFTY MILES NORTH OF SINGAPORE
Further Japanese Landing CONVOY ATTACKED BY ALLIED PLANES CRUISER AND TRANSPORTS HIT LONDON, January 27. In Malaya the main battle is now taking place in an area south of a road running across the peninsula about 50 miles north of Singapore. On the eastern coast, after a Japanese convoy had been attacked by Allied planes, the enemy succeeded in getting troops ashore. The Japanese losses were very heavy. At least twelve enemy fighters were destroyers and our bombers scored a direct hit on a cruiser and twelve hits on troop transports. Fighting is in progress 25 miles south of Endau. There is little change in the central battle area. The Japanese are novz concentrating on dive-bombing and machinegun attacks. In the western area fighting is proceeding twelve miles south of Batu Pahat. Singapore had a raid this morning, following one yesterday and one during the night.
