GIANT BOMBER
WORLD’S HEAVIEST PLANE THE SHORT-STIRLING. CARRIES BOMB LOAD OF EIGHT TONS. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) ; LONDON, January 26. Though the giant four-engined ShortStirling bomber has been prominently operating for over a year, its details have just been released. It is the world’s heaviest aeroplane and weighs more than 36 tons. Fully laden, it can carry a bomb load of more than eight tons. It is 87 feet long, has a 99 feet wingspan, and is 23? feet high. It carries a crew of seven, also three gun turrets in which are mounted a total of eight Browning guns. Its maximum speed is approximately 300 miles an hour, and its range is over 2000 miles. Though it is such a giant, the ShortStirling is easy to manoeuvre, and often chases German fighters, who will not tackle it unless they number at least 3 to 1.
