COMPULSORY UNIONISM

FARMERS IN SHEARING SHEDS. WAIVING OF LAW WANTED. Disapproval of the ruling under Avhich farmers assisting neighbours were compelled to join the shearers’ union if payment were accepted Avas expressed at yesterday’s meeting of the Wairarapa Provincial Executive of the Farmers’ Union. Mi- J. L. Heckler asked what the position was when a farmer- helped his neighboui’ to shear his sheep. He wanted to know if a helpei’ in these conditions had to become a member of the shearers’ union.

Mi- R. E. Chamberlain said as long as payment was accepted the person concerned had to become a member of the union.

“These pin-pricking tactics are very irksome,” said Mi- Alex Ross, who thought some protest should be made, as under present conditions things should be made as easy as possible, especially for those wishing to assist others. On the motion of Mr Chamberlain it was decided to ask that the rule where a bona fide farmer helped another he should not be compelled to join a union, whether - he accepted payment 01- otherwise.
