SALE OF BREAD
POSITION IN MASTERTON INVESTIGATED VISIT OF DEPARTMENTAL OFFICERS. RESELLERS' CASE TO BE PLACED BEFORE AUTHORITIES. The case of the Masterton Resellers’ Association regarding the sale of bread locally is to be put before the authorities in Wellington. Mr E. Steed, representing the Ministry of Supply and the Wheat and Flour Controller, and Mi- F. W. Dawson, representing the Oil Fuel Controller, have been visiting Masterton concerning the problem which has arisen following the decision to discontinue the delivery of bread. The resellers’ case has been presented for an increase in the gross margin of id per 21b loaf which they consider to be inadequate. The request of the resellers to the Master Bakers’ Association for some further concession cannot be met for the reason, as explained by the Departmental officers, that the price of bread is regidly fixed by Government regulation. In Masterton the fixed prices are: Wholesale to resellers, sid; cash ovex- the counter 6d, and no variation whatsoever- in these levels can be made without infringing the the Board of Trade Act under- which the regulations are enacted. Messrs Steed and Dawson met both the master- bakers and the resellers and after discussing the difficulties involved promised to bring the resellers’ case before the appropriate authorities in Wellington, following their return to Wellington today.
