HOUSEHOLDERS BUSY
REDUCTION OF LIGHTING. USE OF TINS AS SHADES. There has been a considerable demand for blackout paper in Masterton following on the decision of the Dominion Lighting Controller to extend the restriction of lighting to the Wairarapa. As far as householders are concerned, no very drastic action is demanded meantime, except that all windows and fanlights in rooms used at night should be screened by blinds and that one room should be prepared so that it can be completely black-, outed in case of an emergency.
In the average house blinds are fitted to all windows but in many cases the fanlights are not covered. It is necessary to cover the fanlights either by a blind, a curtain, or by pasting on opaque paper, so that no light glow is to be seen. Much can be done, too, by shielding electric lights by means of a tin, with the interior painted to reduce reflection. A lib cocoa tin, for instance, provides an excellent shade. If the light is still too great the lid of the tin may be used and a slit or round hole cut in it to give the amount of light desired.
