FLANKING ATTACK

THE THREAT TO VIAZMA

HEADWAY IN THE UKRAINE & LENINGRAD ZONES. DRIVE TOWARDS SMOLENSK. LONDON, January 23.' Moscow announces that the Red Army has captured a town five miles beyond Borodino on the route from Mojaisk (which fell on January 21) to Viazma. The Russians are driving toward Smolensk from the north-east, east and southeast. Fierce battles are raging for Rzhev, the vital strategic point north of Viazma, while on the southern arm of the front further Soviet forces are attempting to drive a new wedge into the German line with the object of outflanking Viazma from the south. The “Daily Telegraph’s” Moscow correspondent cables that he has every

reason to believe the Russians are already in Viazma. There is no confirmation of this.

The latest report on the main road drive states that the Russians are now only 40 miles from Viazma. Wide Soviet pressure was reported yesterday on the Ukraine and Leningrad fronts, with some advances achieved. The Germans have begun using cavalry in defensive counter-attacks.
