WAR COSTS

INCREASE IN AUSTRALIA. ECONOMY AND HIGHER TAXATION. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright! (Received This Day, 1.25 p.m.) CANBERRA, This Day. Heavier indirect taxation, new loans and economy in spending by the State Governments will probably contribute towards the extra expenditure necessitated by the entry of Japan into the war. An approximate estimate is that war expenditure will exceed £250,000,000 by the end of the financial year, instead of the £221,000,000 provided for in the last Budget. The Federal Cabinet is also expected to impose new indirect taxation to raise another £2,000,000, which is needed to increase old age and invalid pensions from 23s Gd to 25s’a week.
