The “New York Times" reports that Mr Roosevelt conferred secretly with Mr Philip Murray, president of the Congress of Industrial Organisations and promised support for Mr Murray in his controversy with Mr John L. Lewis over the latter's drive for a resumption of the peace negotiations with the American Federation of Labour.
Mr Roosevelt declared that the unification scheme is a plot by isolationist enemies, notably Mr William J. Green, president of the American Federation of Labour, and Mr William Hutcheson, vice-president. to undermine Mr Roosevelt's influence with organised Labour.
Mr Murray asserted that the initiation of peace moves now would stir up political intrigue to such an extent that defence production might be retarded.
