Misses Joan Irwin and Melva Wickens have returned to Masterton after a holiday spent at Kaikohe and Auckland. Mr H. A. Harcombe, of Harcombe’s Motors, Ltd., Masterton, has taken up military duties for the duration of the war.

Mr W. F. L. Ward has been reappointed acting-governor of the Reserve Bank of New Zealand for a further term of three months.

The engagement is announced of Muriel Joan, only daughter of Mr and Mrs A. McGregor, “Hikorangi,” Masterton. to William John, eldest son of Mr and Mrs W. A. Cave,’ Tupurupuru, Masterton.

The funeral of the late Mrs H. W. Lee took place at Masterton yesterday afternoon, the cortege being a large one. The services at the house and the graveside were conducted by the Right Rev. J. Davie. The pall-bearers were Messrs J. H. Griffin, A. Donald, J. V. Gordon, D. Walker, J. Carbet and J. McGregor. A large number of wreaths were received.

The appointment of Group Captain Arthur de Terrotte Nevill as Deputy Chief of Air Staff is announced in last night’s “Gazette.” He relinquishes his appointment as Air Force Member for Supply, and remains ' a member of the Air Board. Wing Commander Francis Esme Theodore Hewlett is appointed to succeed Group Captain Nevill as Air Force Member for Supply with membership on the Air Board. The death ocurred at the residence of his daughter, Mrs W. H. Tills, Lyall Bay, of Mr John Thomson, in his 87th year. The late Mr Thomson came to New Zealand with his parents 83 years ago. arriving in Dunedin. Mr Thomson operated a number of sawmills in the South Island until he retired to live in Wellington and Whakanae a few years ago. He leaves a family of one daughter. two sons (Messrs Thomas Thomson, of Masterton, and James Thomson, of Wellington). His eldest son, John, died four years ago. He is also survived by one brother, Mr James Thomson (Balclutha).
