DUTCH SUBMARINE

ESCAPE FROM TARAKAN. JAPANESE AIR ATTACKS. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 12.35 p.m.) RUGBY, January 21. A Dutch submarine ! with a damaged engine escaped during the Japanese attack on Tarakan, according to a communique issued by the headquarters of the Netherlands East Indies forces in Batavia which states: "Yesterday afternoon, a lightship near Medan was bombed and machine-gunned by three enemy aircraft, after an air reconnaissance had taken place. No damage was done. Later on the same afternoon five Japanese aircraft, after having circled over parts of Medan for about half an hour, dropped about nine bombs. Three persons were killed, while damage to property was small. “Enemy aircraft attacked aerodromes in Borneo, damaging an aircraft station.”
