Mr G. S. Nicol has resigned his position as secretary of the Royal New Zealand Institute of Horticulture. Constable Andrew Gregor, of Greytown has been appointed under the Licensing Act, 1908, as an inspector of clubs for the purpose of inspecting and reporting upon chartered clubs, as defined by the Licensing Act.
A tea party was given by Mr and Mrs W. Needham, Jean Street, last night, in honour of the 21st birthday of Miss Nancy Needham. Miss Gladys Hoar entertained the guests with vocal items. Later those present attended the pictures and enjoyed supper.
The engagement is announced of Megan Taylor, only daughter of Mr and Mrs Phil Taylor, Los Angeles, tcLindsay Ronald Mandeville Ellis (late of Glenburn, Masterton), only son of the late Commander and Mrs W. H. M. Ellis, Bentley Manor, Redditch, Worcestershire, England.
The death has occurred at Hastings, of Mrs Catherine Douglas, aged 94. Born in the Orkney Isles, she came to New Zealand many years ago, where her husband, who predeceased her, engaged in farming. She lived in retirement in Hastings for the past 18 years.
Private F. Jones, son of the Minister of Defence, was among the New Zealand prisoners of war recaptured when the Allied forces reoccupied Bardia. Private Jones, who is attached to Divisional Signals, was taken prisoner when Brigadier J. Hargest and other senior officers were captured. The funeral of the late Mr Benjamin Rayner, which took place yesterday, was largely attended. The Right Rev. John Davie officiated. Wreaths were sent by the following: —Messrs Barber Bros.. Ltd., John Graham and Co., Ltd.. Hill and Hughes, Ltd. (Carterton), Wright. Stephenson and Co., Ltd., directors and members of the Wairarapa Caledonian Society, and others from private sympathisers. Messrs L .R. Wilton, E. F. Wilton. N. Rayner, H. Rayner. F. Booth and A. Dixon were the pall-bearers. The death occurred in Auckland yesterday of Mr Valentine Savage, in his 100th year. He was a notable figure in Auckland and the Bay of Plenty during the 19th century. Descended on his father's side from a notable feudal family whose name has. appeared many times in medieval English history, he was, through his mother, a direct descendant of the great Bay of Plenty chief, Apanui Ringamutu, the father of the Whanau-a-Apanui. In view of his descent from Harawaka, the father of a sub-tribe of Apanui, he was the principal chief of that subtribe. He served an apprenticeship to ship and boat-building in Auckland. He also worked with his fathei' •at Matata, Bay of Plenty.
