AMPLE STOCKS
NO SHORTAGE OF SUGAR ASSURANCE OF MINISTER OF SUPPLY. SALES RESTRICTIONS DUE ONLY TO ABNORMAL BUYING “Any scarcity of sugar locally,” said Mr J. Robertson, M.P., today, “is due to unnecessary and abnormal buying. There are ample stocks in New Zealand and no one needs to rush the market.” With a view to obtaining official advice on the position. Mr Robertson communicated with the Minister of Supply, Mr Sullivan, following reports of a shortage in Masterton. The Minister replied as follows: “I can assure you that there are ample stocks of raw sugar in New Zealand and the quantity of refined sugar available for distribution is limited to the quantity melted weekly, which in normal times is more than sufficient to meet all requirements. During the past few weeks heavier purchasing has exceeded the weekly melt and this has created a temporary, artificial shortage, which has caused distributors to restrict sales. As the public again resumes normal buying the matter will adjust itself.”
