STUNNING BLOW
STRUCK BY AUSTRALIANS AIR FORCE ALSO DOES GREAT EXECUTION. ROAD PACKED WITH DEAD. SINGAPORE, January 18. Temporarily stunned by the blow dealt their frontal attack by the A.I.F. and the Air Force, the Japanese are now trying to attack our flanks, says the official Australian war correspondent. Several small parties of the enemy succeeded in making coastal landings, but the move had not taken us unawares. Each enemy party encountered has been wiped out. The Japanese are trying to sneak sampans and small barges down the coast, and the Air Force has done good work in destroying many craft at sea. At one point where a landing was attempted, A.I.F. gunners got some guns right down to the beach. Firing over open sights, they destroyed several craft, and dispersed the rest. On the main front there has been no direct contact with the main body of the enemy since the night of January 15. The Japanese barely had time to recover from the initial blow dealt them by the A.I.F. when the Air Force weighed in, shooting up and bombing many miles of roads closely packed with their columns. The pilots reported the road as being packed with dead for a considerable distance.
