AIR OFFENSIVES
OPERATIONS OVER LIBYA DIRECT .HITS ON ENEMY POSITIONS. PLANES CRASH INTO SEA. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 11.10 a.m.) RUGBY, January 16. A R.A.F. Middle East communique states: “Our fighter-bomber aircraft continued offensive operations over Libya yesterday. Fighters were particularly active over the Agheila region, while bombers of the Free French Air Force resumed their attack on enemy positions at Halfaya. Direct hits were obtained on gun emplacements, motor transport vehicles and dugouts. Off Tobruk a JUBB, hit by anti-aircraft fire, crashed into the sea in flames. Another enemy aircraft crashed into the sea off Benghazi. It is now known that two MEIO9F and one G5O were destroyed and other enemy fighters damaged on January 11. The pilot of one of our fighters reported missing that day has now returned to duty. In bad weather on Wednesday night bomber aircraft again attacked objectives in Tripoli. Bombs were seen to burst in the harbour' area.
“Enemy aircraft raided Malta yesterday and on Wednesday night. Some damage was done to civilian property. “From these and other operations all our aircraft returned safely.
