TWO ENEMY DESTROYERS
Sunk by Netherlands Batteries at Tarakan JAPANESE AIR ACTIVITY CONTINUES LONDON, January 16. In the fight for Tarakan two Japanese destroyers are known to have been sunk by Netherlands coastal batteries. A Batavia communique, announcing’ this success, states that a landing ship was also sunk and a seaplane shot down. Before the battle came to an end all guns and searchlights and other arms were destroyed. In an enemy air raid on the Molucca Islands yesterday, some military damag’e was done and there were some casualties. Twenty Japanese bombers, escorted by fighters, took part. One enemy plane was shot down and another probably destroyed. Two Netherlands planes were lost but both the pilots are safe. Another raid was reported today. Japanese aircraft have again raided Rabaul, in New Britain, and reconnoitred the Bismarck Archipelago. A Royal Austral--ian Air Force communique states that it was a high level attack and civilian property was damaged. Last night Australian aircraft attacked military targets in the Japanese Caroline islands. One plane failed to return.
