FEATHERSTON
CARD PARTY PATRIOTIC EFFORT. (“Times-Age” Special.) A very successful patriotic euchre party evening was held last night in the Odd Fellows’ Hall when thebe was a large attendance. The player obtaining the highest score was Mrs M. Rasmussen with Mrs J. Mellish second. Miss Beauchamp and Mr C. E. Skipage were the lucky number winners. A competition for a box of chocolates was drawn and was won by Mrs B. Algie. Women Signallers. The W.W.S.A. signallers have altered their class night from Tuesday to Mondays. The class although a small one is very enthusiastic, the _ girls showing great keenness and aptitude. When semaphore signalling has been mastered it is the intention of the instructor, Mr J. A. Halpin to teach the girls morse. The class is indeed fortunate in having the services of Mr Halpin, who takes a great interest in the work. He not only gives instruction but has made* all the flags for the Home Guard and the W.W.S.A., and when it is realised what a busy person he is, this is a very much appreciated effort. Personal Items. The Rev R. S. Keenan will leave early in February to take over his new duties at Methven. Mrs Keenan has already left for the south. Mrs P. Bennett is a visitor to Featherston from New Plymouth. Mrs E. Froment and her daughter, Valerie, of Wanganui, are staying with Mr and Mrs George Cuff, South Featherston. Miss Dorothy Bloxam, who is on the nursing staff of the New Plymouth Hospital, is spending her annual leave with her parents, Mr and Mrs H. R. Bloxam. Mrs D. H. S. Riddiford, of Long- ■ wood, is visiting Wellington. , Red Cross Classes. > The Red Cross classes are to resume ■ shortly, when the subjects for study . will be sanitation and hygiene. It is ; hoped that opportunity will be taken > by members to enrol with the class, as the knowledge gained should be of i vital importance. Vegetable Shortage. Potatoes, old or new, are unprocurable in the township. Even the carrot has been conspicuous by its absence; in fact there has been a drastic . shortage of vegetables generally owing to the late growth in the gardens. However, several enterprising firms are endeavouring to cope with this shortage. We may not be altogether deprived of our spinach. A Wise-crack. Quite a genuine wise-crack was made by the small boy of a local family when his big sister announced her engagement. He apparently had been digesting the birth notices in the paper and wanted to know why the words “both well” were not inserted after the engagement announcement. Patriotic Dance. The Patriotic Committee will hold a dance in the Town Hall on Saturday night for the entertainment of troops, 1 when it is hoped that there will be a good attendance. The music will be supplied by Udy’s Orchestra. Recreation Room. A recreation room, under the control of the W.W.S.A., for members of his Majesty’s forces, will be opened on Sunday in the Town Hall. The supper room has been set aside for this purpose when it is hoped that the troops can rest, read, write and be entertained generally. If desired, they can also obtain light refreshments at a nominal price. COSY THEATRE TONIGHT’S PROGRAMME. Thrills, action and excitement combine to make “Big Town Czar,” a “must see” film, the cast being headed by Barton McLean. (Recommended by the Censor for adults). Also showing will be “Young People,” with Jack Oakie in the chief role. (Approved for Universal Exhibition).
