COURAGE AND DETERMINATION
Shown by General MacArthur’s Troops WELL-PREPARED POSITIONS HELD JAPANESE BOMBERS RENEW ATTACKS ON CORREGIDOR LONDON, January 15. General MacArthur’s forces in the Philippines continue to hold their ground and the Corregidor batteries have shot down more heavy Japanese bombers. On land there has been a general infiltration by the enemy all along the line but General MacArthur’s forces, states a Washington War Department communique, are holding their well-prepared positions with courage and determination. Nine heavy Japanese bombers attacked the fortifications of Corregidor Island. Five of them were shot down and others 'were hit. The damage to the fortifications and casualties to the garrison were slight. A message from Washington states that the entire United States Asiatic Fleet escaped intact from Manila and is now co-operating with the Allies in the Far East. The Treasury in Washington announced that the' American authorities destroyed or removed many million dollars worth of assets from the Philippines to prevent their falling into Japanese hands.
