Compulsory War Service.
“Regulations are being prepared to provide for compulsory emergency precaution duty on the part of everybody, and will shortly be gazetted,” announced the Minister of National Service (Mr Semple) in an address to members of the Wairoa E.P.S. in Wairoa last night. Mr Semple said he hated the word compulsion, but the time had come when everybody must pull his weight, for the position was extremely serious. The slacker would have to be put in his place.
Importation of Potatoes.
Orders have been placed for 1500 tons of imported potatoes, which should arrive in New Zealand in the near future. Making this announcement yesterday, the Minister of Marketing, Mr Barclay, said there would be sufficient in this consignment for Army supplies and for a surplus which would be distributed throughout New Zealand for civilian requirements.
