ENEMY SPYING
SHIPPING INFORMATION EAGERLY SOUGHT VIGILANCE ENJOINED IN BRITAIN. PROTECTION OF MERCHANT NAVY. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, January 12. Enemy agents are increasing their endeavours to harass Britain’s lifeline. The Merchant Navy personnel is being asked to exercise greater vigilance at ports. Evidence has reached the Admiralty and the Minister of War Transport of increasing efforts to obtain advance information of Allied shipping movements.
Ships’ officers have received official instructions on the security measures they can adopt to counter-act attempts to interfere with shipping supplies. It is pointed out that the enemy will endeavour more and more to create dissatisfaction among British and Allied officers and men and attempt by sabotage to interfere with our shipping services. “In order that close touch should be kept with the security authorities, masters or such officers as they may appoint should establish close contact ..with the consular officers who visit their ships and also with the consuls or consular security officers in ports overseas,” says the instructions.
