VAST AIR ARMADA

ASSEMBLED FOR ASSAULT ON MALTA REPORTED ENEMY PREPARATIONS. IN SOUTHERN ITALY & SICILY. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) LONDON, January 12. The “Daily Mail’s” Madrid correspondent has reported that enemy preparations for an attack on Malta include a concentration of German shock troops at all vantage points in southern Italy from Brindisi to Syracuse. Reinforcements have for a week been pouring southward through the Brenner Pass. The Luftwaffe has assembled a vast armada of troopcarriers, transport planes, bombers and fighters in Sicily and also on aerodromes in the toe of Italy.

A suggestion that the assault is not far distant is strengthened by the fact that the German military authorities have relaxed secrecy about the preparations. Reports from Rome say the attack may be launched within 10 days.
