COLLECTION OF ERGOT

MASTERTON FIRM OFFERS PRIZES. OPEN TO PRIMARY SCHOOL CHILDREN. Ergot is now ripe enough to harvest in the Wairarapa. The most profitable hunting ground for those collecting it is among tall fescue grass growing in damp areas, such as along the banks of rivers, including the Waipoua. The collection period will extend over some weeks, as tall fescue is still putting up new seed heads. The Wairarapa Lake area should yield a good supply of ergot. Messrs G. H. Perry and Co., Ltd., Masterton, are offering prizes for the best collections of ergot in quality and weight, sent in by primary school pupils. The competition, which will close on March 31, is open to children in the Eketahuna area and southwards to Palliser Bay.

Ergot is urgently wanted for war requirements and those collecting it will be doing a national service. Pamphlets regarding its collection are available from seed merchants or the Department of Agriculture office.
