AXIS SUBMARINES

SOME GETTING INTO MEDITERRANEAN USE IN TRANSPORTING TROOPS. ATTITUDE OF THE SPANISH GOVERNMENT. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright i (Received This Day, 11.15 a.m.) NEW YORK, January 2. Numerous Axis submarines, sneaking through Spanish territorial waters, have succeeded in passing the Straits of Gibraltar despite the brilliant vigilance of the British Navy, according to a “New York Times’’ message from Freetown. It is reliably reported that some German submarines are capable of transporting 400 fully-equipped troops. The Spanish Government obviously is pro-Axis, short of war. British patrol ships have repeatedly been shelled from Spanish territory in North Africa. A well-organised maritime supply information service, which is operating from Dakar and the Canary Islands, aids the Axis submarines along the West African coast.
