CARTERTON

SERVICE OF PRAYER A LARGE CONGREGATION. (“Times-Age” Special.) A combined service of prayer was held in St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church last evening, there being a large congregation. The Rev. W. J. Couling referred to the object of the meeting. The service was opened with the singing of the New Zealand National Anthem, “God Defend New Zealand.” Mr Couling took his lesson from the first book of Corinthians, 10th verse. Hymns appropriate to the occasion were sung. Mr W. Martin presided at the organ. The Vicar of St. Mark’s, the Rev. W. F. Stent, delivered a particularly interesting address. The Rev. J. A. Daglish, of the Methodist Church, led the prayers. The singing of the National Anthem brought the service to a close. Personal Items. Aircraftman Alan Thompson, of Carterton, is on leave from the Hobson-' ville Air Base. He is to report later for duty at Levin. New Year’s Eve. Despite the unfavourable weather the streets were thronged with people on New Year’s Eve and shopkeepers report good business. Many people ushered in the New Year beside the fireside listening to the radio. The motor traffic in Carterton on Wednesday evening was again efficiently controlled by Traffic Inspector Ansell and a unit of the Home Guard. E.P.S. Emergency Call. Following the sounding of the fire siren last night the E.P.S. Corps turned out in good numbers. The public were not aware of the emergency call and thought it was made for a fire. Vital Statistics. There were five births, one marriage and one death in Carterton in December. In the quarter ended December 31, there were twenty-three births, ten marriages and four deaths registered. Gas to be Cut Off. Gas consumers are reminded that tomorrow between the hours of 2.30 p.m. and 3.30 p.m. the supply of gas will be cut off to enable urgent work to be carried out at the gasworks. White Hart Hotel Fire. In November last enquiries were made regarding the date when the White Hart Hotel was destroyed by fire. The assistance of the clerk of the Licensing Bench was sought and after searching early records, Mr Whittaker could find no record of the fire. At the last meeting of the Wairarapa Licensing Bench the clerk requested the Carterton Police to go through their early records. A search was made by Constable J. G. Gillies and he is now able to state that the hotel was destroyed on Sunday, June 5, 1898. The Lyceum Hall was burnt down at the same time. New Year Ball. Despite the heavy rain there was a large attendance at the New Year Ball held in the King’s Theatre on Wednesday night, a most enjoyable lime being spent. The music was supplied by Mrs V. J. Ashton’s Orchestra, and extras were played by Miss V. Irwin and Mr Hemi. The duties of M.C. were carried out by Mr Ashton. Novelty dances were held and a savoury supper was served. REGENT THEATRE TONIGHT’S PROGRAMME. The Dead End Kids and the Little Tough Guys will be seen tonight in “Give Us Wings,” with Victor Jory and Wallace Ford. (Recommended by the Censor for adults). ,
