CARTERTON
BOWLING CLUB COMPETITION RESULTS. (“Times-Age” Special.) The following games in club competitions were played last evening:— , Singles: Callender beat Stent, 18/16; Newbould beat Harrington, 20/13. Progressive pairs: Kilmister and Riggs (s) beat G. Steven and A. Thompson (s), 23/12. United Prayer Service. Tomorrow evening in the Presbyterian Church, Carterton, a united prayer service will be held. Personal Items. Mrs L. J. Wiley, Broadway, Carterton, yesterday received a cable message stating that her husband, Pte. L. J. Wiley, is missing. Mr and Mrs Callender and family will spend the New Year holidays at the Paraparaumu Beach. Mr Callender will return to Carterton on Sunday but the remainder of the family will stay at the beach for a fortnight. Mr and Mrs Meyer, of High Street, Carterton, have received a message from their two sons, Privates M, W. P. (“Buddy”) and Mark Meyer, who saw service in Libya. Both relate stirring incidents of the campaign. . While these soldiers are doing their dutj overseas another brother who is unfit for military service, is attending to. his brothers’ interests in a gardening venture.
Pte W. Haste, of Carterton, who is now stationed at Papakura, found it necessary to undergo an operation to his nose. He is in the Auckland Hospital and is progressing favourably towards recovery.
New Year Ball.
In the King's Theatre, Carterton, tonight, there will bo held a "New Year Ball” at which patrons will dance the old year out and the new year in. The music will be supplied by Mrs V. Ashton’s Orchestra of four players which should be a guarantee that in this department no fault will be found. Supper will be supplied and the gathering should be one in keeping with the season of year,
WOMEN’S WAR SERVICE
COMMITTEE MEETING.
The fortnightly meeting of the Women’s War Service Auxiliary was held in the Borough Council Chambers, there being present: Mesdames H. E. Ordish (in the”chair), A. F. Pink, W. H. Hall, Miss O. Wolters and Mrs F. L. Barr (secretary). | The president announced that ven members of the Cycling Corps had passed their first aid examination, one having obtained honours. The Dominion Secretary advised that camouflage nets were urgently required. It was stated that instruction would be gladly given to all local women who are willing to undertake this essential work. In view of the present situation it is desired that all women and girls should take the earliest opportunity of registering with the Womens War Service Auxiliary, so that a complete register of the local women power available can be compiled. BOY SCOUTS CARD TOURNAMENT. There was a large attendance at the weekly card tournament held by the Boy Scout Committee. The prizes were won as follows:—Women: Mrs A. Knutson. 1; Mrs Pinfold, 2. Men: Mr A. Knutson, 1; Mr G. Challis, 2. REGENT THEATRE TONIGHT’S PROGRAMME. “Chad Hanna,” starring Henry Fonda, Linda Darnell and Dorothy Lamour, which will be screened to night, is a story of the circus world in glorious technicolour. (Approved for Universal Exhibition).
